AEO vs SEO: what's different and how to do both

AEO vs SEO is not a fight you have to pick. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) optimises pages to be quoted inside AI-generated answers; search engine optimisation (SEO) optimises pages to rank in Google's list of blue links. They share the same crawlable foundation, but reward different content shapes. This guide gives the honest comparison and a practical split for B2B SaaS teams who have one marketing function and finite time.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

The core difference is the surface and the unit of success. SEO is about ranking positions on a Google results page; AEO is about being named inside the answer that an AI assistant generates. The table below sets them side by side.

Where do AEO and SEO overlap?

AEO and SEO share the foundation. Both depend on a crawlable site, fast pages, clean URL structure, internal links and basic schema. A site that ranks well on Google starts AEO with a head start, because most AI tools either use Google as a retrieval layer or have trained on the same web corpus. There is no version of AEO where SEO does not also help.

Where do AEO and SEO genuinely differ?

Three places matter:

  • Content shape. SEO rewards long, comprehensive pages. AEO rewards pages whose individual sections are independently quotable - question-led H2s, direct answers, named entities.
  • Off-site signal type. SEO weights followed backlinks. AEO weights mentions on the third-party sites AI tools trust for your category - review sites, trade outlets, Reddit, listicles.
  • Measurement. SEO measures positions and clicks. AEO measures mention rate, share of voice and citation source - often without a click.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO does not replace SEO; it sits on top of it. Google is still the largest source of B2B SaaS website traffic, and the pages that work hardest for AEO almost always also rank well on Google. The right framing is "SEO that is also extractable by AI" - which is what generative engine optimisation has always been.

How should B2B SaaS teams split time between AEO and SEO?

For most B2B SaaS teams in 2026, the right split is roughly 70% shared work (technical foundation, on-page writing that serves both, internal linking) and 30% AEO-specific work (FAQ pages, comparison pages, off-site review presence, AI visibility monitoring). The two day-by-day plans that operationalise this are the first week in GEO and the 90-day GEO strategy.

What about GEO vs SEO?

GEO vs SEO covers the same territory as AEO vs SEO - GEO and AEO describe the same work under different names. The sister article GEO vs SEO goes deeper on the SEO comparison; this one is the AEO-flavoured cut.
